Bird Hits Cessna, Breaks Windshield, Strikes Passenger
A bird broke through the windshield of a single-engine Cessna bound for Orlando Executive Airport, and struck a passenger. The airplane made a safe landing. Further details on the accident are expected shortly.

I'll be looking for the follow-up to this story. I am interested in finding out why the windshield didn't hold up. With all the testing and certification that is required for aircraft stuff like this shouldn't happen. Glad they landed safely.
It was a single engine cessna. The front windshield is made of 1/4 inch plexiglass. They don't do the same kind of testing on that class of aircraft as they do for something like a Boeing or an Airbus.
I know this is a far cry from legitimate testing, but MythBusters on Discovery Channel fired chickens out of a cannon at Piper Cherokee windscreens (somewhere around 100/120 mph) - the chickens went right through shattering a hole in the plexi. It was later explained there is no windscreen bird strike standard for GA aircraft.
I'm more curious to know why the propeller doesn't shred the bird first before it goes into the windscreen in a case like this (Cessna single?)
That's definitely not something you want happening to you in the middle of a nice, relaxing flight!
I am also curious, like duo, why the prop doesn't chop the bird up, or at least knock it away from the windshield?
